Engine On/Off Automatic Detection
When the input voltage from the engine alternator/battery drops below the shutdown level, the smart DC to DC determines if the engine is running using AI. If it determines the engine has been shut down, the DC to DC is truned off until the input voltage rises above the configurable Restart level.
Input Voltage Lockout
When the input voltage drops below a configurable level, the output is de-activated until it rises above the restart level.
Recover batteries that have a low charge level or are "dead"
Most popular brand DC to DC chargers (see article on Redarc Here) can not start functioning until there is an acceptable voltage level on the battery side. This Victron Smart DC to DC filters out a power supply from the charging alternator to operate even when the battery voltage is exceptionally low. The Smartphone app allows you to set the charge voltage from 10V up to 15V. This is a life-saver on a trip into a remote area with no other support.
Smart alternator compatibility
Vehicle manufacturers are now introducing smart ECU (Engine Control Unit) controlled alternators to increase fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Smart alternators deliver a variable output voltage and are shut down when they’re not needed. The converter has a engine running detection mechanism. This prevents the converter from discharging the starter battery when the alternator does not supply power. See section 5 of this manual for more details.
Separation of the starter battery and the service battery

Adaptive three step charging
The Orion-Tr Smart Isolated DC-DC charger is configured for a three-step charging process:
During this stage the controller delivers as much charge current as possible to rapidly recharge the batteries.
When the battery voltage reaches the absorption voltage setting, the controller switches to constant voltage mode. For lead acid batteries it is important that during shallow discharges the absorption time is kept short in order to prevent overcharging of the battery. After a deep discharge the absorption time is automatically increased to make sure that the battery is completely recharged. The fixed or adaptive mode can be chosen on the battery settings.
During this stage, float voltage is applied to the battery to maintain it in a fully charged state. When the battery voltage drops substantially below this level, due to a high load for example, during at least 1 minute, a new charge cycle will be triggered.
